Op American Recordings III staat een prachtige versie van U2′s One en The Mercy Seat van Nick Cave. Laatstgenoemd lied gaat over een (onterecht) terdoodveroordeelde, waarbij met the mercy seat zowel de elektrische stoel als Gods troon wordt bedoelt. Voor dit nummer heb ik een gehoorbeschadiging over, echt waar. Het bouwt op tot een perfect samenspel van Cash’ stem, gitaar, piano en een pijporgel. De laatste is bij aanvang slechts latent aanwezig, maar naar het einde toe gaan letterlijk alle registers open, wat de dramatiek van het nummer nog eens extra onderstreept.

De tekst is symbolisch, gruwelijk en prachtig tegelijkertijd. Ik krijg er kippenvel van, keer op keer op keer weer.

I love grand gestures when it comes to music. On top of that, I’m a Teletubbie listener: I can play certain CD’s for months or years in a row until I completely know and understand their lyrics. That might also be the reason why I can listen to the same music so often: understanding a song takes more time than just listening to it. The American Recordings of Johnny Cash is one of those CD’s. On six albums (simply numbered I to VI) he recorded his own, unique Cash version of songs of others. I love that man’s rugged voice and the way he almost just talks his songs instead of singing them. 

On American Recordings III there’s a beautiful version of U2′s One and Nick Cave’s The Mercy Seat. The last one is about an innocent man that’s sentenced to death row. The mercy seat refers both to the electric chair and Gods throne. Even the risk of hearing loss can not keep me from playing this song too loud on my iPod. It builds up beautifully, starting with just Cash’s voice and a guitar, ending in a climax of Cash singing, accompanied by a piano and a pipe organ. The latter is latent at the beginning of the song, but in the end it literally pulls out all stops, underlining the dramatic subject of the song by doing so.

The lyrics are symbolic, horrible and beautiful at the same time. I can listen to them over and over and over again. Which I’ll probably be doing for the next couple of months or years.

While Molly and I played peek-a-boo in the staircase (I point my camera and she disappears to the attic), I remembered I still wanted to take a pic of the Jessica Nielsen poster I won with a give-away of 101 Woonideeën and PSikhouvanjou. I’m one lucky basterd, thanks so much dear ladies, better late than never, huh? About that other picture: I’m seriously considering making myself a white camouflage suit with stair pattern, or maybe a yeti suit will do the trick too. With a big white and furry coat I would certainly look like some kind of Molly species, wouldn’t I?

Tja, deze titel deed het beter in het Nederlands. Een tijdje geleden besprak ik het al met blogvriendinnen, maar het is inmiddels wel een voldongen feit: planten zijn overal (interieursprekenderwijs natuurlijk). Ik mestte de servieskast weer eens uit en maakte er bovenop plek voor simpele (kringloop) bloempotten versierd met mijn awning randjes en masking tape. Fijne Moederdag!

A while ago I discussed it with blogfriends and in the meantime it’s no use denying it anymore: plants are hot. I cleaned out the cupboard again and made space on its top for some plain white (thrifted) pots that I decorated with my awning stickers and masking tape. Happy Mother’s day y’all!

Om het feit te vieren dat ik zonder kleerscheuren mijn Oh Marie! presentatie bij Creative Mornings Utrecht heb doorstaan zonder te huilen/emotioneel in te storten/me op het laatste moment ziek te melden/te doen alsof de kat overreden was/of andere redenen had bedacht om onder het feit van het praten voor 75 man in het Engels uit te komen kreeg ik van mijn allerLiefste dit knutselboek van Donna Wilson. Het is natuurlijk voor kinderen, maar a. ik heb besloten dat ik het kind in mijzelf koester en b. ik ben een luie handwerker, dus dit kinderniveau kan ik waarschijnlijk nét aan.

De presentatie ging goed trouwens, ookal was ik vreselijk nerveus voor die tijd. Ik ontving na mijn verhaal zoveel lieve en fijne feedback van al die leuke mensen die de moeite namen om naar mij te komen luisteren, dat ik bijna voorstelde om met een groepsknuffel af te sluiten. Het filmpje komt op Creative Mornings te staan, maar ik durf niet te kijken, ik verdraag het niet om mijzelf terug te zien. Diana van Mamamarketing maakte trouwens een twitverslag met de highlights uit mijn presentatie, leuk om terug te lezen voor een kernachtige samenvatting!

To celebrate the fact that I presented my Oh Marie! story at Creative Mornings without crying/breaking down/calling in sick in the last moment/pretending my cat died/making up other excuses to not have to stand in front of 75 people to tell a 20 minute story in a language other than my native language, my sweet Love gave me this present: Donna Wilson’s Creative Creatures book (for kids..but I decided to cherish my inner child, so that ain’t a problem either). The perfect book for a lazy crafter like me: if a child can make it, I certainly (probably) can too!

The presentation went all smooth and peachy by the way, even though I was terribly nervous. I received so many great and sweet reactions from the lovelies that attended, I wanted to do a group hug in the end. The presentation will be on the Creative Mornings website soon (I myself am too scared to look at the clip though, I can’t stand watching myself on video!). Het was allang geen geheim meer natuurlijk, ik hou ontzettend van kinderboeken. Momenteel heb ik de vintage exemplaren van Pippi Langkous op mijn kringloopverlanglijstje staan, maar ik kan ze in de regio amper vinden. Waarschijnlijk is Pippi te anarchistisch voor de mensen hier, óf men houdt zo van die boekjes dat niemand ze wegdoet, kan ook nog. Maar, de aanhouder wint. Recent vond ik er één, bij een kringloop van de kerk nota bene. Kijk hier, hier en hier voor meer recent gevonden kinderboekjes!

I have a thing for children’s books and currently have the vintage examples of Pippi Longstocking on my thrift wishlist. Apparantly, Pippi is too anarchistic for this region, I couln’t find one at all (or those books are so well loved, nobody gets rid of them of course!). But, my perseverence paid off, I found one! Na twee jaar heb ik eindelijk weer een tuin om in te scharrelen. Misschien dat ik ooit nog weleens mijn toetsenbord in de wilgen hang en tuinman wordt. En alleen nog maar plantjes en dieren fotografeer.

After two years I finally have a garden again to fumble in. One day I might throw out the computer and just become a gardener, one who photographs only plants and animals.

Aankomende vrijdag vertel ik het verhaal van Oh Marie! bij Creative Mornings (ik sta zelfs op de homepagina, argh!). Ik voel deze week een mix van vereerdheid en (doods)angst en ik oefen me helemaal suf, ik spreek immers ook nog op The Hive, eind mei. Rommelen in ons huis werkt als nu extra als stressreductie! Het ingelijste behang komt van Wendel, ze gaf me een stuk toen ik haar huis fotografeerde voor Oh Marie! Ik vind het helemaal te gek.

Friday next I’m telling my Oh Marie! story at Creative Mornings (I’m even on the home page, argh!). I feel a mix of pride and anxiety this week, I’m practising like crazy (this is also the perfect exercise for The Hive, where I speak at the end of May.) To keep my stress levels manageable, I potter around the house as much as possible. The framed wallpaper is a piece Wendel gave me when I shot her home for Oh Marie! by the way. I think it’s absolutely fabulous.

Ik neem een weekje vrij, tot volgende week!

Such a delight, all that sunshine this weekend. Yesterday I launched the latest issue of Oh Marie! (called Ahoy Marie!) and we received so many sweet comments on it, I will be walking on sunshine for weeks. Finally, the tree in our back garden is blossoming and my hands are itching to put that garden of ours in order. And we finally found a guy for Streep. She didn’t like the first companion we picked for her (a cute grey guy called Plok, it turned out that he was scared to death to our little lioness), but this one, Gerrit, seems to be the guy for her. They have the same floppy ears, I’m totally in love with those two (and sincerely hope they will fall in love too)! I’m taking the week off, see ya!

Deze bosvrienden vond ik bij een Héule Slechte kringloop. Alles in die kringloop is zooi met een hoofdletter Z en áls iets nog niet kapot was, gaat dat het wel, door de wijze waarop het in de schappen ligt…gepletterd. Dit maakt de zoektocht naar iets moois en onbeschadigds echter nog veel interessanter, nietwaar? Laatst vond ik er dit borduurwerkje, in perfecte staat en prachtig ingelijst (borduurwerken zijn vaak zó mooi ingelijst, achter ontspiegeld glas..iets dat een vermogen gekost moet hebben) voor een euro. Laat ik nu gek zijn op bosdieren.

De hondenboekensteun(en) vond ik op een mega-rommelmarkt tijdens mijn bezoek aan het hoge noorden laatst. Ik vond ze leuk, maar te duur. Mijn Lief is echter een echte onderhandelaar (waarom doen mannen dat toch? Is dat oer ofzo, afdingen?) en kocht ze alsnog voor me, voor een fractie van de prijs. Wat een man.

I found these cross-stitched forest friends in a very crappy second hand shop. Everything in that shop is junk with a capitol J and if it isn’t when it arrives, it becomes junk because of the way it’s thrown onto the shop’s shelves. On the other hand, it does make the search for something undamaged and cool much more interesting, doesn’t it? I found this cute embroidery there, recently. It’s in mint condition (a miracle) and perfectly framed (embroideries are often beautifully framed). And it just so happens that I love forest animals.

We found the bookend(s) at a huge yard sale during our visit to the north. They were too pricey for my taste, but my Love likes to bargain (is that a man thing? It is huh? Why do I (and a lot of other women) find bargaining so embarrassing?), so he bought them for me for a fraction of their price. What a man!

Lieve Moomin spullen, gekregen van mijn broer. Ik herlees de stripboeken weer, fijn vermaak na een lange dag werken. Aanstaande zaterdag verschijnt het nieuwe nummer van Oh Marie! met als thema Ahoy Marie! Het wordt weer schitterend, mag ik dat zelf zeggen?

Beautiful Moomin items, presents from my brother. I’m re-reading the Moomin comics again, they’re the perfect read after a hard day’s work. Next Saturday the new issue of Oh Marie! themed Ahoy Marie! releases. It’s going to be another pretty issue and yes, I’m totally tooting my own horn here!
